Relief Fragment

Bild aus CA-Sammlung GefangeneGermanin

Bild aus CA-Sammlung GefangeneGermanin

At the end of 19th century a relief fragment was excavated from the city wall of Mainz which probably comes from the barriers of a building (Praetorium) in the Roman camp there, i. e. in the upper Rhine headquarters. The column bases and the slabs attached between the columns illustrate a fight between Romans and Germanics from the departure of the Romans until their homecoming with Germanic prisoners. The relief shows one of the female prisoners. The Germanic sits upright, inclines her head sadly and supports it with her left hand. Although a coat, which she has pulled over her head and folded up in her lap, veils her body, her tightfitting, net-like clothes can still be seen, as can the fact that she is wearing trousers. A crack, which means that the figure ends abruptly at knee height, indicates that the slab is no longer in its original size, and might even have been twice as large. A single foot is visible, indicating that the original probably featured a second figure seated opposite.
