Inscription-Fragments
The collection of Halle consists mainly of casts, but there are some originals too. Fragments of Roman grave inscriptions are among the preserved originals. Owing to the brevity of the texts and the absence of their respective contexts, unfortunately it’s not possible to establish who died and where the funerals took place. So questions, for example about the figurative or ornamental decoration, must remain open. The collection has no written records with information about the pieces at its disposal. Since there are also no documents in the university archive, all the pieces in the collection had to be listed, described, identified and investigated again. Unfortunately, it has not been possible to identify all of the pieces (confer e. g. at a relief).
