Bust of Julius Schniewind
After his first stay as a student, Schniewind (1883-1948) returned again and again to the Theological Faculty at the University of Halle-Wittenberg despite interruptions caused by war, distant teaching assignments and violations by the National Socialists. He gave lectures as „Privatdozent“ and professor of New Testament. Since questions concerning the development of parishes and the Church after the Second World War were very important for him, he became provost of the district of Halle-Merseburg in 1946. This engagement occupied him a great deal at a time of the rearrangement of scientific and ecclesiastical life. He died in 1948. The portrait bust made by an unknown artist shortly after his death might refer to Schniewind’s last years. It shows a lean face with hollow cheeks in which his alert, kind eyes stand out. The bust of Julius Schniewind is one of three busts erected on virtually equal pedestal in the possession of the Theological Faculty in Halle. The other two busts were erected in the first floor of the number 25 of the Francke Foundation in Halle and show Hermann Gunkel (1862-1932) and Erich Klostermann (1870-1963).
